The Golden Shower Tree – Descriptive Features

The scientific name of amaltas tree is cassia fistula and it belongs to the family Fabaceae. it is not a very big tree size-wise, it generally grows in the height range of 10 to 15 meters. Many people refer to amaltas as the Indian laburnum, but it is very unfair rather unfortunate to compare the amaltas with the laburnum tree. Because most of the parts of the laburnum tree are poisonous in nature on the other hand most of the parts of amaltas tree have medicinal properties and values.

The canopy of the amaltas tree is quite irregular, the bark of the young trees is quite smooth and it is a little bit greenish-grey in color but as the tree matures the bark of the tree starts turning to a rather yellowish-grey color.

The leaves of the tree are alternately arranged in a spiral pattern around the stem. The leaves of the tree are oblong and ovate in shape with smooth margins. They generally fall in the size range of 15 to 50 cm in length.

The flowers of the amaltas tree grow in bunches and generally, each flower has five Petals. These fragrant flowers of the amaltas tree are arranged on a terminal drooping cluster which can be up to 40 cm in length.

The fruit of the amaltas tree is a leguminous pod which is cylindrical in shape. This pod can grow up to 60 cm in length and it contains around 40 to 100 seeds. When this pod is young it is green in color but as it matures it becomes brownish in color and even after maturing it is very hard and it does not break easily.

1. The stomach is considered one of the most important parts of the body. Many people believe that most of the diseases that any person gets ill from, have their roots in the stomach. In Ayurveda, many herbal medicines have been prescribed for curing stomach disorders. Amaltas has been given a primary place amongst all these herbal medicines.

This is because amaltas is very effective in treating stomach disorders. It is especially very beneficial in coping up with constipation. For getting rid of the stomach disorders the seed pod of the amaltas tree has to be used. This seed pod has a pulp inside it, this pulp is to be taken out and it has to be soaked in water along with some raisins for the night. And in the morning the pulp and the raisins have to be consumed on an empty stomach. This will help you to eradicate all types of stomach diseases.

2. The Pulp of the amaltas tree is also very effective in dealing with a cough and respiratory disorders. For such issues, the Pulp of the amaltas tree has to be cooked in a glass of water along with 3 to 4 leaves of Basil and 2 to 3 black pepper. It is to be remembered that the water is not to be boiled but it is to be cooked on medium flame. After cooking the mixture for some time it can be consumed for getting relief from cough and other respiratory disorders.

3. The Pulp of the pods of the amaltas tree is also very beneficial in removing the ulcers and infections from the stomach and intestines. The pulp from the pods has to be soaked overnight along with 2 to 3 grams of coriander and then it has to be consumed in the morning.  It will not only help to heal ulcers but it will also help in treating other problems like swelling and acidity.

4. The flowers of the amaltas tree can be eaten directly in raw form they help a great deal in fighting the cough, cold, and digestion. If you do not wish to consume the raw flowers, then you can dry these flowers in the sunlight. And then they can be converted into a powder form for eating like a churan.

5. People who are suffering from acne and pimple problems can also be benefited by the amaltas tree. For getting relief from this problem the bark of the tree has to be taken and it has to be grated and converted to a thick paste. This paste can be applied to the whole face, it will not only cure the pimple and acne problem but it will also help to bring back the natural glow of the face.

6. The beauty of the amaltas tree is such, that it cannot be hidden from anybody. Many people use amaltas tree as an ornamental tree for enhancing the beauty of their homes. The amaltas tree has the power to make the whole place look beautiful.

8. The pulp of the fruit pod has been found to be a rich source of many micronutrients such as potassium, calcium iron, and manganese. It also contains many amino acids like aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and lysine.

How To Grow A Amaltas Tree

1. You can grow a beautiful amlatas tree from its seeds which are found in the fruit pod. You can take out the seed from the pod for the propagation purpose. The pod is quite hard; as such you will need a hammer to break it. Gently break the pod shell using a hammer and take out some seeds.

2. After collecting a healthy seed, scratch the tip of the seed, so as to help in the germination process. If you want you can also make a tiny incision on the seed with the help of a blade which will help it to soak the water properly and hence germinate faster.

3. Take a glass of water and put all the Amaltas seeds inside it so that they soak water completely before going into the soil.

4. After 2 to 3 days, the seeds get fully soaked and now they can be pot in the soil.

5. You can use a seedling tray to plant your seeds, make sure to make drain holes in your seedling trays. You can use 60% coco peat and 40% sand and soil for making the potting mix. Fill your tray with the potting mix.

6. Now place the soaked seeds on the soil with some gap with a thin layer of soil on the seeds to cover them and sprinkle water thoroughly using a spray bottle. Don’t let the soil dry out, make sure to sprinkle water daily and put the tray in a partially shaded area.

7. After almost a week you will see that the seed will start sprouting, and after a few more days, you will be able to see the new leaves coming out. After a few more days you can put it into the soil.
